Bears, Redskins split middle school games
Harlan County and Cumberland split a two-day middle school baseball doubleheader as the Redskins won 9-5 on Monday at James A. Cawood before HC bounced back to win 13-3 on Tuesday at Cumberland.
Carter Caldwell pitched a complete game for the Bears in their win.
Gabriel Helton led the HC offense with four singles. Brylee Southerland added three singles. Carson Sanders had two singles. Grant Caldwell contributed a double. Bryson Mills, Cian Garland and Maddox Helton added one single each.
Nathan Harrell, Balin Foutch and Brycen Saylor each had two hits for the Redskins.
Robby Johnson gave up eight runs (two earned).
Hutton Sherman led Cumberland the opening win with a triple and three singles. Perez had two hits. Harrell, Foutch, Caleb Barrett and Dakota Smith added one hit each.
Foutch struck out six in 4 2/3 innings. Saylor recorded the final out.
Sanders had a triple and single in the opening game. Maddox Helton and Grant Caldwell added two singles each. Gabriel Helton had a double. Kaysen Combs added a single.
Gabriel Helton pitched four innings with seven strikeouts and five walks. Garland struck out one and walked five in 1 2/3 innings.
The 7-4 Redskins play Letcher Central on Thursday.

Thompson, Daniels lead Lady Bears in rout of Corbin
The Harlan County Lady Bears rolled to an 11-1 win Thursday over Corbin in middle school softball action.
Khloe Daniels pitched a one-hitter for the Lady Bear with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Campbell Thompson led a 10-hit HC attack with a double and single and three RBI. Aniston Burton had two singles and two runs scored. Lexi Boggs added a double. Bella Ford, Cayleean Yount, Maddy Barrett, Daniels and Zoey Reed contributed singles.
Redskins roll past Buckhorn, Jenkins
Cumberland swept two games Saturday at Jenkins in middle school baseball, routing Buckhorn 17-2 and the host Cavaliers 17-5.
Balin Fetch had two hits against Buckhorn, including an inside-the-park homer. Dakota Smith also had an inside-the-park homer. Javontae Stewart and Nathan Harrell each added triples, Brycen Saylor had a double. Hutton Sherman, Robby Johnson, Hunter Blair and Caleb Barrett added singles.
Smith struck out seven and walked three in two innings on the mound, Sherman struck out three in one inning.
Johnson led the Redskins against Jenkins with two doubles and a single. Saylor had two triples. Sherman, Harrell and Foutch each added a double and single. Smith added a double and Blair had a single.
Harrell pitched two innings, giving up two earned runs with two strikeouts and three walks. Brayan Perez struck out one and walked three in one inning. Johnson struck out one and walked one in one inning.
Cumberland (10-5) will play host to Harlan on Monday.
Johnson leads Redskins to victory over Letcher
Led by Robby Johnson with two doubles and a single and Hutton Sherman, Brycen Saylor and Baylin Foutch with two hits each, the Cumberland Redskins defeated Letcher 11-4 on Thursday in middle school baseball action to improve to 8-4.
Foutch and Sherman each had triples and Saylor added a double. Brayan Perez and Dakota Smith had one double each. Hunter Blair contributed a single.
Caleb Barrett pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.
