A two-run walkoff double by junior center fielder Aly Sherman capped perhaps the Harlan County Lady Bears’ best comeback of the season in an 8-7 victory Monday over visiting Whitley County.
Carmen Thomas opened the inning with a single to center and seventh grader Aniston Burton followed with a bunt hit to set the stage for Sherman’s game-winning hit to center.
The Lady Bears trailed 7-2 midway through the fourth inning before scoring two runs in the fourth, one each in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh.
Alexis Adams and Bella Miniard each had a double and two singles to lead the HC offense. Sherman and Jordyn Smith added a double and single each. Jaylin Robinson, Kendal Brock, Thomas and Burton added one single each.
Adams earned the win in relief as she gave up two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Smith gave up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks in one inning. Maddy Fields started in the circle and allowed four unearned runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The 14-12 Lady Bears play host to Bell County on Tuesday in a game that will determine the second seed in next week’s 52nd District Tournament.
