Balanced attack carries Knott to win at HCHS

Harlan County sophomore guard Hailey Austin worked against Knott Central’s Presley Fletcher in Saturday’s game.

One of the 14th Region’s top teams, the Knott Central Lady Patriots placed four in double figures in a 66-42 win Saturday at Harlan County.
Sophomore guard Abby Maggard scored 15, followed by senior guard Keara Mullins with 14 and freshman guard Kylie Gayheart and sophomore guard Presley Fletcher with 13 each to lead the 6-2 Lady Patriots.
Harlan County (3-4) was led by senior guard Jacey Lewis with 11 points.
Maggard had three baskets in the opening quarter as Knott built a 17-10 lead. Gayheart had three baskets in the second quarter as the Lady Patriots’ lead grew to 30-21 at halftime. Lewis and Kelly Beth Hoskins each had 3-pointers for the Lady Bears, who missed five of six free throws in the quarter.
Maggard had eight points, including two 3-pointers, as Knott outscored HCHS 18-12. Kassy Owens had two baskets for the Lady Bears.
Mullins scored seven points for Knott in the fourth quarter as the Lady Patriots won the period 18-9.
Harlan County (3-4) returns to action Monday at Perry Central.

Layce Hall scored 14 points to lead Knott to a 35-34 win in junior varsity action.
Taylor Lunsford led the 2-2 Lady Bears with 11 points. Taytum Griffin scored nine, followed by Hailey Austin with five, Haley Middleton with four, Jenna Wilson with three and Paige Phillips with two.
