Harlan County senior Hunter Blevins is ranked among the state leaders in the shot put. He won the meet at Harlan County High School last week.

The Harlan County boys placed second and the girls finished third in the Harlan County All-Comers Meet in late March.
Corbin won the girls race with 153 points, 13 ahead of HCHS. North Laurel was third with 133 points, followed by Middlesboro with 71, Harlan with 48, Whitley County with 27, Letcher Central with 19 and Lynn Camp with 15.

“Looking at our results, you can most definitely see accelerated progress for all our kids. They are so resilient, and they haven’t missed a beat in terms of competitive spirit and a willingness to improve,” Harlan County coach Ryan Vitatoe said.
The HCHS boys won several events, led by Hunter Blevins with first place in the shot put and second in the discus. Gavon Spurlock won the high jump and was second in the triple jump. Caleb Brock was first in the 1,600 meters. Daniel Joseph won the 3,200 meters. Matt Yeary was first in the 300-meter hurdles.
“We have several who have turned in record breaking performances that rank them among the state’s best in our division. I’m so proud of Caleb and Hunter’s focus, and they’ve really set the tone for their teammates,” Vitatoe said. “We have a lot of excellent guys out, and it’s shaping up to be a historic season for the boys program. I think they have the opportunity to be among the best teams in our county’s history if they continue to work hard.”
Kassy Owens led the Harlan County girls as she finished first in the the long jump. HCHS also was first in the 4 x 100 relay.
“I’m just now getting all my girls out from winter sports, but I’ve been really pleased with the effort of all the girls. I think this team has an opportunity to be highly competitive at the regional level as well, if we can get everyone in the right spot,” Vitatoe said.
Harlan’s Marissa Marlowe was first in the discus and second in the shot put.
