Harlan County shuts out Fleming-Neon for first victory

After three hard-fought losses to open the season, the Harlan County fifth- and sixth-grade team broke through for a 22-0 win Tuesday at Fleming-Neon.
Tyler Coots led the Patriots with 74 yards and one touchdown on three carries. Dyson Freeman had 89 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Braydon Howard had 68 yards on six carries. Sam Carr added 56 yards on five carries. Hayden Grace had 36 yards on five carries. Freeman and Howard each contributed two-point conversions.
Mason Stewart led the Harlan County defense with nine tackles. Coots had eight tackles. Carr contributed six tackles and a 54-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Caleb Mitchell also had six tackles. Grace and Howard added five tackles each.
New Harlan fell 26-16 at Perry Central on Aug. 28.
Carr led Harlan County with 62 yards on seven carries, with a touchdown and two-point conversion. Howard had 46 yards on five carries. Coots added 24 yards on three carries with a touchdown. Freeman had 25 yards on five carries with a two-point conversion. Coots and Easton Engle teamed on a 32-yard pass.
Isaiah Baker led in tackles with five. Stewart, Mitchell and Engle had four each.
The Patriots fell 22-14 to Middlesboro on Aug. 24 at Bell County.
Freeman led Harlan County with 69 yards on nine carries. Howard had 55 yards on six carries. Carr had 49 yards and a two-point conversion on seven carries. Coots added 24 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Grace had 13 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Engle had a 27-yard reception.
Stewart led in tackles with five. Grace and Eli Joseph added four each.
Harlan County will return to action Thursday at home against Bell County.

 

 

 

Middleton powers Cawood to win over JACES

Maddi Middleton scored 16 points to lead Cawood in a 28-19 win over James A. Cawood in seventh- and eighth-grade basketball action Tuesday.
Kaylissa Daniels and Lacy Robinson each scored six points to lead the Trojanettes.
Carmen Thomas scored seven to lead JACES to a 19-12 win in fifth- and sixth-grade action.
Riley Clem led the Lady Comets with seven points.

Day, Runions lead Wallins past Cumberland

Led by 10 points each from Addison Day and Kylee Runions, Wallins coasted to a 36-6 win Tuesday over visiting Cumberland in fifth- and sixth-grade basketball action on Tuesday.
Preslee Hensley poured in 18 points as Wallins won 40-5 in a seventh- and eighth-grade game.
