Freshmen Ethan Simpson and Evan Simpson represented Harlan County earlier this week in the Pine Mountain Golf Conference Junior Varsity Tournament at the Wasioto Winds course in Pineville.
Knox Central’s Grant Miller was first in the tournament with a 91. Ethan Simpson was second with a 102, followed by Bell County’s Brayden Saylor with a 108. Evan Simpson finished with a score of 112.
“Every time I watch these guys play they get better and better. I really have to remind myself that they’ve been playing competitive golf for about four months,” Harlan County coach Greg Lewis said. “Ethan really played well these two days. He hit the ball well and really thought his way around the course well. He was very consistent shooting 51-51 over the event. Had his putter been a little hotter he would have won the tournament. Again, after four months of competitive golf finishing second out of 17 golfers is pretty impressive. Evan is hitting the ball so much better than when the season started. He’s really putting in the work and he is literally cutting strokes off his score every time he plays. Over the two rounds, he missed a few shots in places that made it really difficult to get it up and down. He hit the ball well enough to win. He just didn’t score as well.”
