Hounds edge Harlan with a run in final inning

Corbin scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge visiting Harlan 2-1 in middle school baseball action Friday.
Harlan pitchers Brody Owens add Baylor Varner gave up only four hits as Owes struck out three and walked one in three innings and Varner fanned two and walked none in two-plus innings.
Braydon Down led the Dragons on offense with two singles. Owens and Eli Freyer added one single each. Freyer drove in a run and Owens scored a run.

 

New Harlan claims second win of season

The New Harlan Patriots improved to 2-0 on the season with a 13-5 win Thursday at Cumberland.
Brayden Morris led the Patriots at the plate with two singles. Chance Sturgill had a double. Brennan Blevins, DaShaun Smith, Jesse Gilbert, Aiden Lewis and Colby Shepherd contributed one single each.
Sturgill struck out four in 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Ethan Stewart fanned three in 1 1/3 innings. Blevins struck out two in one inning.
Braxton Bolin, Riley Fuson, Hayden Cornett and Evan Crow had singles for the Redskins.
Kayden Adams pitched 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Zayden Casolari pitched 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
The Patriots return to action Friday at home against Shelby Valley.

 

Dragons, Patriots win season-opening games

Harlan and New Harlan each opened their middle school baseball seasons Tuesday with wins as Harlan won 4-0 at Letcher Central and New Harlan defeated visiting Cumberland 19-0.
Jake Brewer and Luke Luttrell teamed on a two-hitter to lead Harlan as Bewer struck out six and walked one in four innings and Luttrell fanned five and walked one in two innings.
Brewer led the Harlan offense with a double and single. Chris Rouse added a single.
Brennan Blevins pitched a no-hitter for the Patriots with three strikeouts.
Chance Sturgill led the New Harlan offense with a double and single. Blevins, Grant Shelton and Colby Shepherd added two singles each. Hunter Coker had a double. Brayden Morris, DaShaun Smith, Jesse Gilbert, Aida Lewis, Ethan Stewart and Rydge Lewis contributed one single each.
Zayden Casolari, Braxton Bolin and Ethan Skroch shared mound duty for the Redskins.

Knox Central rallies for win over Lady Skins

Knox Central rallied with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to edge visiting Cumberland 4-3 in the middle school Lady Skins’ season opener Monday in Barbourville.
D’anna Cook led the Lady Skins at the plate with two singles, a double and an RBI. Kaylee Pendleton had a double. Destiny Smith and Aly Sherman each had a single.
Sherman went the distance on the mound for the Lady Skins, giving up four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Roark pitched a complete game for the Lady Panthers, giving up six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Cumberland (0-1) returns to action on March 22 against New Harlan at Harlan County High School.
