Harlan senior guard Jordan Akal was honored during the Sweet Sixteen on Friday afternoon as the KABC 13th Region Player of the Year. Akal was a five-year starter for the Dragons and the second all-time leading scorer in Harlan history behind only 1995 Mr. Basketball Charles Thomas.

Harlan’s Jordan Akal took his place among Kentucky’s top seniors last week during the Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena as he was honored as the KABC 13th Region Player of the Year in ceremonies during the tournament. Akal and other 15 regional winners were on hand as finalists for the Kentucky Mr. Basketball award.
Akal finished his Harlan career with 2,629 points, ranking second behind only 1995 Mr. Basketball Charles Thomas. Akal averaged 25.2 points per game as a senior as the Dragons finished 22-11 and made it to the 13th Region Tournament for the fifth straight year
“As a coach and his father, I’m proud of all he’s accomplished in his career, and this is another one of those moments where I’m proud,” said Harlan coach Derrick Akal.
Akal said his son had yet to make his college decision but was considering several possibilities.
