Cardinals pull away late for win over HCHS

Tristan Cooper is expected to pitch for Harlan County in the first round of the 52nd District Tournament on Monday.

Harlan County stayed close most of the way, trailing 2-0 through five innings, before visiting South Laurel pulled away late on the way to a 7-2 win Monday.
Maison Lewis drove in three runs on a double and single to lead the South offense. Harrison Byrd had two singles and scored twice. Ashton Garland, Cole Harville, Connor Combs, Landry Collet and Tanner Dezarn added one single each.
Harville pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on seven with with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Tristan Cooper pitched well for the Bears until running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, with five strikeouts and three walks. Brayden Blakley allowed two runs on two hits in 1 2./3 innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.
Nate Shepherd and Blakley had two doubles each for the Bears. Jonah Swanner added one double. Will Cassrim and Braydon Burton contributed one single each.
The 1-8 Bears play host to Shelby Valley on Tuesday.
