A transfer from Tennessee, Dawson Irvin is off to a good start in his first season with the Harlan Green Dragons and had his best day to this point on Tuesday in the first round of the All “A” Classic at Lynn Camp.
Irvin gave up oniy one hit over 5 2/3 innings, striking out 14 and walking only one to lead the Dragons to an 11-1 win and into the semifinals.
“I’m super proud of the team’s effort tonight,” Harlan coach Lee Freyer said. “Dawson worked ahead all night. That’s a key to being successful on the mound. When he’s ahead of hitters, he’s dangerous.”
Evan Browning led the Harlan offense from the leadoff spot, driving in three runs while recording four hits in five at bats. Browning pounded out two doubles and scored three runs.
“I knew Evan was going to hit the ball well before we even got on the bus. We took batting practice before we left the field, and he was really dialed in,” Freyer said. “It was the most focused I’ve seen him in batting practice this season.”
Jared Moore added two singles for the Dragons. Jaedyn Gist and Noah Lewis added one each.
John Mark Bryson gave up one run on one hit as he came on to pitch in the sixth inning. Moore finished the game as he struck out three while recording the final four outs.
Harlan will play host to Pineville on Thursday in the tournament semifinals.
