Owens tosses no-hitter as Dragons defeat Cumberland

Brody Owens pitched a no-hitter as Harlan closed its regular-season schedule with a 17-2 rout of visiting Cumberland in middle school baseball action Friday.
Owens struck out six and walked eight in the three-inning game as Harlan improved to 9-2 on the season.
Baylor Varner led Harlan’s 13-hit attack with an inside-the-park homer and a single. Chris Rouse had a triple and single. Jake Brewer, Eli Freyer and Owens added two singles each. Landon Myers contributed a double. Luke Luttrell and Braydon Down added one single each.
Harlan will play in a middle school state tournament next week at Prestonsburg.

 

Green Dragons pull away for win over New Harlan

Harlan took control of what had been a close with five runs in both the third and fourth innings to win 14-3 in middle school baseball action earlier this week at the James A. Cawood field.
Luke Luttrell and Brody Owens led Harlan with a double and two singles each. Eli Freyer had three singles. Baylor Varner added a double and single. Landon Myers and Braydon Doan contributed two singles each.
Brennan Blevins led the Patriots with a double and single. Colby Shepherd had two singles. Jesse Gilbert, DaShaun Smith and Aiden Lewis added one single each.
Gilbert struck out three and walked none as he pitched for the Patriots.
The 8-2 Dragons play host to Cumberland on Friday in their last regular-season game and then will play in a middle school state tournament next week in Prestonsburg. The 6-2 Patriots play at home on Thursday against Bell County.

Patriots edge Bell in middle school baseball

New Harlan improved its record to 7-2 with a hard-fought 3-2 win Thursday over visiting Bell County in middle school baseball action.
Chance Sturgill pitched five innings, striking out three and walking two. Jesse Gilbert struck out two to earn the save as he pitched the final inning.
Gilbert and Grant Shelton each had doubles to lead the New Harlan offense. Sturgill, Aidan Lewis, Brennan Blevins, Colby Shepherd, Rydge Lewis and Ethan Stewart added one single each.
The Patriots will return to action Saturday at Letcher.

Blevins leads Patriots to victory over Middlesboro

New Harlan improved to 6-2 on the season by edging Middlesboro 11-10 in middle school baseball action.
Brennan Blevins led the Patriots with three singles. Aidan Lewis singled twice. DaShaun Smith, Grant Shelton, Colby Shepherd and Rydge Lewis added one single each.
Blevins earned the win on the mound as he struck out nine and walked four.
Lawson led Middlesboro with two singles. Burchett had a double. Young, Killion, Bayless, Coots and Hatmaker added one single each.
