Lady Skins capture middle school district title


Cumberland won the middle school district championship with victories over New Harlan and Bell County.

Cumberland, seeded third coming into the tournament, captured the middle school district softball title with a 13-5 win Monday over New Harlan in the semifinals and an 8-6 victory Tuesday over Bell County in the finals.
Destinee Smith and Lexi Adams each had an inside-the-park homer and double against New Harlan. Daelyn Garland singled twice. Aly Sherman had an inside-the-park homer. D’anna Cook added a single.
Sherman pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks.
Smith led Cumberland agains Bell with a triple and single. Olivia Middleton singled twice. Sherman, Kaylee Pendleton, Adams and Sydney Jenkins added one single each.
Sherman pitched a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Cumberland will advance to regional competition, taking on Barbourville in a first-round game.
