HCHS, Harlan suffer road district losses

Harlan County’s Halanah Shepherd, pictured in action earlier this season, had a double and single in the Lady Bears’ 11-9 loss Monday at Middlesboro.

Harlan County and Harlan each suffered district losses Monday on the road as the Lady Dragons fell 12-1 in six innings at Bell County and the Lady Bears’ late comeback fell shot in and 11-9 loss at Middlesboro.
Mallory McNiel led the 4-20 Lady Dragons with two singles. Ella Lisenbee hit a home run. Addison Jackson and Ally Kirby added one single each.
Carley Thomas gave up 12 runs (six earned) on 12 hits with five strikeouts and nine walks.
Hailey Austin had two doubles and a single and Madison Blair singled three times to lead the 10-19 Lady Bears. Halanah Shepherd added a double and single. Jade Burton singled twice. Brittleigh Estep and Jenna Wilson contributed one double each. Halle Raleigh and Rylie Maggard added one single each.
Estep pitched a complete game for HCHS, giving up 11 runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Harlan County plays at Pineville on Thursday and closes the regular season at home Friday against Leslie County. Harlan travels to Barbourville on Tuesday and Letcher Central on Thursday to close the regular season.
Harlan will play Middlesboro and Harlan County will take on Bell County in first-round games from the 52nd District Tournament next week at Middlesboro.
