Lady Bears rout Williamsburg in scrimmage as six reach double figures

Harlan County junior point guard Ella Karst sliced past a Williamsburg defender in scrimmage action Saturday. Karst scored 19 in the Lady Bears’ 96-43 victory.

With six players reaching double figures, the Harlan County Lady Bears showed the balance they hope will allow them to top last year’s 20-win season on the way to a 96-43 rout of visiting Williamsburg on Saturday.
Junior guard Ella Karst led the Lady Bears with 19 points. Taylor Lunsfored, Taytum Griffin and Hailey Austin each scored 13. Jaylin Smith added 12 and Cheyenne Rhymer tossed in 10 off the bench.
Madisyn Hopkins led Williamsburg with 19 points.
An early 3 by Hopkins gave Williamsburg its only lead before HCHS scored seven straight behind Karst, Austin and Smith. Rhymer, Smith and Austin sparked another run as the Lady Bears led 25-14 going into the second period.
Karst, Smith and Kylie Jones had baskets as the Lady Bears continued to pull away. The lead grew to 48-17 by halftime as Rhymer and Maddi Middleton provided a spark from the second unit.
HCHS opened the third quarter with a 15-3 run as Karst, Austin, Smith and Griffin scored. Rhymer had a couple of baskets late in the quarter as the Lady Bears led 69-28.
Harlan County opened the fourth quarter by scoring 20 straight points on baskets by Karst, Smith, Jones and Rhymer and outscored Williamsburg 27-15.
The Lady Bears will open their regular-season schedule on Nov. 28 at home against Knott Central.

Freshman guard Cheyenne Rhymer scored 10 points to lead the Lady Bears. Maddi Middleton added seven points. Peyton Lunsford scored four. Lacey Robinson and Whitley Teague added two each. Savannah Hill chipped in with one.
Madisyn Hopkins paced the Lady Jackets with 13 points. Lorelei Coleman and Abby Moses scored two each. Ashtyn Foley added one.
