Bears, Dragons open preseason with wins over Lee

Harlan County and Harlan each claimed scrimmage wins this week over Lee, Va., as the Bears won 9-2 and the Dragons took an 11-7 victory.
Tristan Cooper, Brayden Blakley and Karsten Dixon combined on a two-hitter as each pitched two innings.
Cooper struck out four and walked two while giving up one hit. Blakley struck out three and walked two while allowing one hit. Dixon struck out four and walked one while giving up no hits.
Alex Creech had three singles to lead the Bears. Tyler Lunsford added a double and single. Braydon Burton, Isaac Kelly, Blakley, Cooper, Gunnar Johnson and Kaden Boggs had one single each.
Jared Moore led the Dragons on offense with a double and single. Donovan Montanaro added two singles. Brody Owens and Aiden Johnson added one single each.
Montanaro gave up five runs on four hits in two innings, with two strikeouts and four walks. Moore allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Johnson retired four batters while allowed one unearned run on two hits one strikeout and one walk.
Harlan County will open its season Tuesday at home against Knox Central. Harlan will play at Leslie County on Thursday.



Burgan fans 11 as Lady Dragons open season with victory

Adelynn Burgan pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk as Harlan opened the middle school softball season with an 11-5 win Thursday at East Bernstadt.
Burgan led the Harlan offense with a triple and single. Jordan Smyth and Addyson Patton each added a double and single. Gracie Hensley singled twice. Emilee Shaw had a double. Bella Minaird, Breslyn Harmon, Lacey Lemarr and Shaedyn Crow added one single each.
Miniard drove in two runs while Harmon added one.
