Bears open soccer season with victory

Harlan County’s Cayden Shanks battled with Barbourville’s Jacob Lundy for possession of the ball in the season opener Thursday at the James A. Cawood field. The Black Bears rolled to a 7-2 victory.

The Harlan County soccer team opened its season with a 7-2 win Thursday over visiting Barbourville.
“With the limited practice we have had, I felt we played well at times,” Harlan County coach Tommy Key said. “I’m proud of these guys, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
Johnny Brock and Hunter Mefford each had three goals to lead the Bears. David Blas added one goal.
Nick Hunting had nine saves. Hunter Smith added two saves.
The 1-0 Black Bears play host to Hazard on Saturday.
