CORBIN — The Clay County Lady Tigers did plenty of damage at the top of their order with seven hits out of the top three spots to capture the 2A Section 7 Tournament title with a 5-2 win Wednesday over Harlan County.
Anna Samples recorded a double and two singles from the third spot. Leadoff hitter Madison Sizemore added a double and two singles. Holly Hacker contributed one double.
Alivia Hoskins pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and four walks to earn the win in the circle.
Aly Sherman led the Lady Bears with two singles and two walks in four trips to the plate. Kendall Brock and Bella Miniard added one single each.
Clay scratched out the game’s first run in the third inning as Sizemore singled and scored on Samples’ double.
The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the fourth as Maddy Craft was safe on an error then scored on Emi Reynolds’ triple. A wild pitch pushed the lead to 3-0.
Harlan County finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth as Raegan Landa reached on an error and Brock singled, Miniard added a single before Jaylin Robinson brought in one run with a ground ball. Sherman followed with a single to left that plated one run and would have tied the game if not for a strong throw from Hacker in left to cut down a runner at the plate.
Clay brought in two big insurance runs in the seventh with the help of doubles by Sizemore and Hacker followed by an RBI single from Hoskins.
Alexis Adams pitched a complete game for HCHS, striking out 10 and walking only one while giving up five runs on 10 hits.
The 4-1 Lady Tigers advance to 2A state competition.
The 3-2 Lady Bears play host to Claiborne, Tenn., on Saturday.
