Evarts knocks off Wallins in county tourney action
Rosspoint’s Addison Gray worked toward the basket as Black Mountain’s Chelsea Cottrell defended in action from the county tournament on Monday. Rosspoint advanced with a 24-18 victory.

Two of the top seeds advanced but third-seeded Wallins fell to Evarts in the opening round of the seventh- and eighth-grade county tournament at James A. Cawood on Monday.
Evarts, seeded sixth after four straight trips to the county finals, knocked off the third-seeded Lady Devils 25-22. Ashley Preston and Drucilla Brown each scored six to lead the Lady Cats.
Whitley Teague paced Wallins with 10 points.
Rosspoint won 24-18 in the opening game, led by seven points each from Lyndsey Skidmore and Hayleigh Vanover.
Jayden Parker led Black Mountain with 10 points.
Cawood rolled past Cumberland 30-8 as Cheyanne Rhymer poured in 18 points.
Top-seeded James A. Cawood will play Rosspoint at 5:30 p.m. and Evarts will play Cawood at 7 in the semifinals on Thursday. The consolation and championship games are set for Saturday at Harlan County High School, starting at 5 p.m.
The fifth- and sixth-grade county tournament opens Tuesday at JACES with James A. Cawood playing Cawood at 6 p.m. Wallins plays Evarts at 7 p.m. and Rosspoint takes on Cumberland at 8 p.m.
