Harlan County closed its regular season schedule in tennis with a pair of wins Monday over visiting Bell County.
The HCHS boys, who improved to 6-9, avenged an earlier loss with a 5-1 win. The HCHS girls improved to 11-4 with a 3-1 victory
“I am very proud of the way we came out and played today,” Harlan County coach Caleb Bailey said. “I told my team before the match that they win or lose before they even walk on the courts. The boys avenged a loss they took to Bell a few weeks ago with a solid performance tonight. We have a young boys squad that has gotten so much better since the first half of the season and tonight’s win shows. Some of the first year players we have are freshman and sophomores that are having to play against juniors and seniors that have played since seventh grade in some matches. The core we have will be tough in the next few seasons as they have a drive to get better. Cody Clayborn and Tony Reynolds have been the leaders on our team, and I hate that we are losing them after this season.”
Lindsay Hall and Jaya Wilhelmy were singles winners for the Harlan County girls, then teamed on a win in doubles.
“The girls are just playing really well together right now and their season record shows. The girls are 11-4 this season and I believe it is the best record they have ever had in the history of Harlan County tennis,” Bailey said. “I think our teams are prepared for the regional tournament and we have a shot to win multiple matches this and possibly get a few players seeded.”
