Trailing by one at halftime in the championship game of the fifth- and sixth-grade 13th Region All “A” Classic finals, the Harlan Lady Dragons were in danger of losing both a championship and a perfect season.
The Harlan offense came alive after scoring only seven points in the first half by turning up the heat on the defensive end. The points in transition sparked the offense as Harlan took the lead, then took control on the way to a 40-24 win over Pineville.
Harlan completed a perfect 15-0 season with the win.
“Our full-court man-to-man was the difference this year. We pressed every chance we got, from the beginning to the end,” Harlan coach Kerri McCarthy said.
Addison Campbell, with 18 points, and Peyshaunce Wynn, with 15, again led the Harlan offense and sparked the second-half surge.
“We thought Pineville was wearing down a little and got in some foul trouble,” McCarthy said. “We wanted to try to get the ball down the court, and our girls did a good job of passing.”
Campbell and Wynn sparked an 8-3 run to close the third quarter as the Lady Dragons built a 23-17 lead. The two hit back-to-back 3-pointers in a 15-4 run early in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Clara Strange scored 12 points to lead the Lady Lions, who were led by former Harlan all-stater Debbie Hoskins Green.
Harlan advanced to the finals with a 40-11 rout of Middlesboro in the semifinals as Wynn scored 14 and Campbell added 10.
Pineville rolled past Jackson County 33-14 in the semifinals and routed Lynn Camp 52-0 in the first round. Jackson County defeated Williamsburg 31-20 and Middlesboro downed Barbourville 20-7 in other first-round games.
The seventh- and eighth-grade league tournament will open Monday at Barbourville.
