Black Bears upset Hounds, Cards in Corbin

Harlan County’s Brody Napier worked around a Perry Central defender last week. The Black Bears knocked off Corbin and South Laurel on Monday at Corbin.

Harlan County earned its two most impressive wins of the summer on Monday at Corbin, defeating the host Redhounds 82-66 and South Laurel 64-52.
The Bears, still adjusting to Trent Noah leaving the team, played without junior guard Jonah Swanner, who was ill.
Senior guard Daniel Carmical poured in seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points in the win over Corbin. Maddox Huff and Jaycee Carter, both sophomores, scored 18 and 16 points, respectively. Huff also had 11 assists. Caleb Johnson scored 11. Brody Napier added eight.
Huff poured in 29 points against South Laurel. Carmical added 22. Carter scored five, followed by Johnson with four and Brody Napier and Hunter Napier with two each.
The Harlan County junior varsity team edged Corbin 38-37. Hunter Napier led the Bears with 12 points, followed by 10 points from Reggie Cottrell, nine from Terry Delaney and seven from Ethan Simpson.
The 8-1 Bears return to action Tuesday at Knott Central.
