Lady Bears split two summer games at Corbin

CORBIN — The Harlan County Lady Bears opened the final week of their summer schedule on Monday with a hard-fought 54-49 loss to defending 13th Region champ Corbin followed by a 51-39 victory over McCreary Central.
Senior guard Jaylin Smith scored 14 to lead HCHS against Corbin. Junior point guard Ella Karst added 12 points, all in the second half. Paige Phillips added 10 points. Taytum Griffin scored six, followed by Faith Hoskins with five and Maddi Middleton with two.
Karst poured in 19 points and Smith added 16 to lead HCHS against McCreary. Griffin scored nine. Hoskins added three. Phillips and Savannah Hill added two each.
The Lady Bears played without senior center Taylor Lunsford, as well as senior guard Haiiley Austin and sophomore guard Kylie Jones.
Harlan County rolled to a 37-17 junior varsity win over Corbin as freshman guard Cheyenne Rhymer led the Lady Bears with 13 points. Lacy Robinson and Addi Gray scored six points each. Savannah Hill tossed in five. Whitney Noe added four. Maddi Middleton chipped in with two. Preslee Hensley scored one.
Harlan County returns to action Tuesday at Middlesboro and closes summer play on Thursday at Knox Central.

Harlan County opened summer play with losses to Bell County and Knox Central at Bell. The Lady Bears defeated Leslie County 42-29 and Letcher Central 42-39 in action at Leslie County. The Lady Bears defeated Clay County 52-36 last week in Manchester. The HCHS junior varsity squad also defeated Clay.
