Harlan junior third baseman Eli Freyer was a one-man wrecking crew Tuesday as he drove in six runs on two home runs to lead the Green Dragons to a 14-2 five-inning win at Cosby, Tenn.
“Eli did a great job at the plate today. It’s the first time in a long time I can remember one kid hitting two homers in one game for us,” Harlan coach Lee Freyer said. “He’s been hitting the ball really hard this year. I knew this was coming. He works incredibly hard at his craft and now he’s starting to see some results.”
Caiden Jackson adde a double and two singles as part of the Dragons’ nine-hit attack. Landon Myers had a double. Baylor Varner, Chris Rouse and Jaxson Perry added one single each. Perry scored three times and recorded five of Harlan’s nine steals on the night.
Freshman Cooper Thomas earned his second win of the season as he gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
“The boys came out hungry today. Cooper did a great job filling up the zone and keeping them off balance,” Freyer said. “He’s gaining more and more confidence with every outing.”
The Dragons were coming off a 10-0 loss a night earlier against Morristown West.
“Baseball season has peaks and valleys. You always have to take the bad with the good and vice versa,” Freyer said. “Staying consistent and controlling the two things you can control (attitude and effort) become paramount throughout the course of a season. We drew 11 walks today, which was key in sparking our offensive output. The last two games we have struggled a little with our approach at the plate. We had a good meeting with the guys after our loss against Morristown West. As a staff we told them you get good pitches by not swinging at the bad ones.”
Harlan (5-3) will play at Letcher Central on Friday.
