The Evarts Wildcats captured the 2026 Harlan County Elementary Soccer League Championship on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Wallins Purple Devils in an intense and highly competitive title match.
Both teams created promising attacks throughout the game, keeping pressure on each other from the opening kickoff. The match featured strong defensive play, quick transitions, and several close opportunities as the Wildcats and Purple Devils battled for the championship crown.
Evarts found the breakthrough early in the contest. Within the first five minutes, the Wildcats earned a penalty kick following a foul inside the box. At the 10:02 mark, Rayce Bryant calmly converted the penalty kick to give Evarts a 1-0 advantage.
From there, the game remained tightly contested. Wallins continued searching for the equalizer, pushing forward with multiple offensive opportunities and sustained pressure at times during the match. However, the Wildcats’ defense held strong and prevented the Purple Devils from finding the back of the net.
Despite the loss, Wallins finished an outstanding season as tournament runner-up and proved throughout the year to be one of the league’s top teams. The Purple Devils battled until the final whistle and continued to create chances late into the match.
When the final whistle sounded, Evarts secured the 1-0 victory and celebrated being crowned the Harlan County elementary soccer league champions.

The Cumberland Redskins claimed third place in the Harlan County Elementary Soccer League Tournament with a dramatic 1-0 victory over the James A. Cawood Trojans in a penalty kick tiebreaker after the teams battled through a scoreless regulation match.
The game was highly competitive from start to finish, with both teams controlling possession at different points throughout the contest. Cumberland created several promising attacks during the first half, applying pressure offensively and forcing the Trojans’ defense to stay alert. James A. Cawood responded with a strong second half, holding possession for long stretches and creating opportunities of their own.
Despite the offensive pushes from both sides, neither team could break through defensively. Strong backline play and key stops kept the scoreboard at 0-0 through the end of regulation, sending the match into a penalty kick tiebreaker.
Trayce Staten stepped in as goalkeeper for Cumberland during the tiebreaker, while Carson Kazy took over goalkeeping duties for James A. Cawood.
James A. Cawood was unable to convert on its opening penalty attempt, giving Cumberland an early advantage opportunity. Zach Smith stepped up first for the Redskins and calmly converted to put Cumberland ahead 1-0 in the shootout.
The Trojans again came up empty on their second attempt, but Cumberland was also unable to convert its second kick, keeping the margin at one goal. James A. Cawood missed its third attempt before Shiv Chaudhari delivered a clutch conversion for Cumberland to extend the advantage.
When the Trojans failed to convert their fourth penalty kick, Cumberland secured the tiebreaker victory with James A. Cawood having only one attempt remaining.
Both teams battled throughout the match in what proved to be one of the most defensive and evenly matched contests of the tournament.
