Cumberland struck first at 11:47 when Zach Smith found the net, giving the Redskins an early lead. Even while missing several key players, Cumberland held firm defensively and worked to control stretches of the match. Wallins continued to apply pressure but could not break through in the first half.
The match stayed locked in a defensive battle until 11:10 in the second half, when Hunter Evans scored a crucial equalizer on a direct kick. The opportunity came after a handling call against the goalkeeper outside the box, and Evans made no mistake, leveling the score at 1-1 and sending the game to penalties.
In the penalty kick tiebreaker, Wallins used Colton Hensley in goal, while Cumberland relied on Trayce Spurlock. Jace Sargent converted the opening kick for Wallins, while Cumberland missed their first attempt. Wallins then missed their second, and Cumberland also failed to convert, keeping the shootout tight.

Evarts Wildcats advanced in dominant fashion with a 7-0 win over Cumberland Redskins in the County League semifinals on May 14, 2026. Despite Cumberland being short-handed with several key players out, Evarts controlled the match from start to finish.
Evarts opened the scoring at 20:25 when Justin Coots found the back of the net. Cumberland responded with a stretch of strong defensive resistance, managing to slow the attack for a time. However, at 3:00, Jace Hensley converted a penalty kick to extend the Evarts lead. Just moments later at 0:36, Hensley struck again, giving Evarts a commanding early cushion.
In the second half, Evarts continued to apply relentless pressure. Coots added his second goal at 19:35, followed by Jesse Pendergrass scoring at 12:24. Pendergrass struck again at 11:39 to widen the margin even further.
Jace Hensley completed his hat trick at 6:05 after following up a rebound off the goalkeeper and finishing the chance in front of goal. Evarts’ balanced attack and consistent pressure proved too much for Cumberland, securing a shutout victory and a spot in the county league championship.

Wallins Purple Devils advanced to the County League championship with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over James A. Cawood Trojans in a highly competitive semifinal matchup on May 14, 2026.
The first half was defined by strong defensive structure and outstanding goalkeeper play on both ends. Aubrey Faught repeatedly turned away James A. Cawood attacks, keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard despite sustained pressure. On the other side, Brantley Burkhart delivered several key saves for James A. Cawood, denying Wallins multiple scoring chances and helping keep the match level. As a result, the game went into halftime locked at 0-0.
The intensity continued into the second half as James A. Cawood pushed for the upset and both teams created promising attacking sequences. However, Wallins finally broke through at 11:04 when Hunter Asher found space and converted to give the Purple Devils a 1-0 lead. Despite the breakthrough, Carly Hatmaker responded with several important saves for the Trojans at goalkeeper to keep them within reach.
James A. Cawood continued to press for an equalizer, but the combination of Travis Smith in goal and a disciplined Wallins defense prevented the Trojans from leveling the match. In the final moments, Wallins added a decisive insurance goal when Leland Cope launched a long-range shot from near midfield with just 15 seconds remaining. The effort sailed toward goal and just grazed the fingertips of the goalkeeper before finding the net, sealing the 2-0 victory and punctuating a strong semifinal performance for the Purple Devils.
Elementary Soccer Tournament — Round 1
James A. Cawood Trojans 3, Black Mountain Tigers 0
The opening round tournament matchup between the Trojans and Tigers delivered a defensive battle for much of the night, with possession constantly shifting across the field as both teams searched for an opening. The first half remained scoreless as each defense stepped up repeatedly to shut down promising attacks.
In the second half, James A. Cawood Trojans finally broke through after a handling call inside the box awarded a penalty kick. At the 13:14 mark, Carson Kazy calmly converted the opportunity to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, another handling call inside the box resulted in a second penalty kick opportunity for James A. Cawood. Once again, Kazy delivered, scoring at 5:28 to extend the lead.
The Trojans added one final goal late in the contest when Kazy sent a corner kick into the box that found Colton Whitehead, who converted the score at 6:07.
Despite the loss, Black Mountain Tigers battled throughout the contest and kept the match competitive deep into the second half before the Trojans pulled away.
Middle School Soccer Tournament — Round 1
James A. Cawood Trojans 4, Black Mountain Tigers 3
The Trojans pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season Tuesday night, defeating the Tigers in an intense tournament battle filled with huge defensive plays, physical contests for possession, and late drama.
Throughout the first half, both defenses and goalkeepers stepped up repeatedly to keep the ball out of the net as the game remained tightly contested. James A. Cawood Trojans finally broke through at the 17:07 mark when Carson Kazy converted a penalty kick to give the Trojans the early advantage.
In the second half, Kazy delivered one of the most impressive goals of the tournament so far. At 24:02, he sprinted the ball up the field and launched a long shot from well outside the box that soared just beyond the fingertips of the goalkeeper and into the net.
Moments later, at 21:14, Kazy intercepted a goal kick and quickly capitalized, adding another score for James A. Cawood to extend the lead.
The Trojans continued to build momentum when a handling call against Black Mountain Tigers awarded another penalty kick opportunity. At 12:50, Hailey Collins calmly converted to put James A. Cawood ahead 4-0.
But the Tigers refused to quit.
Black Mountain began controlling possession for much of the remaining game and mounted a furious comeback attempt. At 7:59, Joe Cottrell found the net for the Tigers to get them on the board.
Then, at 3:03, a physical battle inside the Trojans’ box ended with Cottrell scoring again to suddenly make the match competitive late.
With only 21 seconds remaining, Black Mountain earned a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. Cottrell converted once more to complete his hat trick and cut the deficit to just one goal.
However, after the reset, the Tigers could not move the ball back into scoring position before time expired, allowing the Trojans to secure the upset victory and advance in tournament play.
Elementary Soccer Tournament — Round 1
Wallins Purple Devils 2, Rosspoint Wildcats 0
One of the most competitive matches of the season for the Wildcats took place Tuesday night as tournament intensity brought out strong defensive play and relentless effort from both teams.
Rosspoint Wildcats stepped up defensively throughout much of the contest, holding off repeated offensive pressure from the Purple Devils and keeping the match scoreless for most of the opening half.
Late in the first half, however, Wallins Purple Devils finally broke through. At the 1:20 mark, a corner kick sailed into the box and bounced around several players before Jace Sargent found an opening and converted the goal.
In the second half, Rosspoint continued battling defensively but struggled to generate offensive opportunities as Wallins maintained possession for much of the play.
Sargent added another goal at 11:57 to extend the Purple Devils’ lead and secure the shutout victory.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats delivered one of their strongest defensive performances of the season and continued to show growth and determination throughout tournament play.
Middle School Soccer Tournament — Round 1
Cumberland Redskins 8, Rosspoint Wildcats 0
The Redskins advanced in tournament play Tuesday night with an 8-0 victory over the Wildcats, though the final score did not fully reflect the defensive effort Rosspoint displayed early in the contest.
Rosspoint Wildcats opened the match with a promising offensive push before quickly finding themselves defending against constant pressure as Cumberland Redskins controlled possession for much of the game.
Despite strong defensive play from Rosspoint throughout most of the first half, Cumberland finally broke through at the 25:06 mark when Zach Smith found the net for the opening goal.
At 4:47, Blaiton Prater added another score off an assist from Smith, and Smith struck again at 3:17 to send the Redskins into halftime with momentum.
In the second half, Cumberland’s offensive pressure intensified.
Jake Cornett converted a penalty kick at 29:08 after a foul inside the box. Cornett added another goal at 21:36 as the Redskins continued to push forward.
At 19:13, Smith delivered a long shot that rolled off the goalkeeper’s fingertips and into the goal before adding another score at 17:33.
The final goal came at 13:29 when Cornett converted another penalty kick following a foul inside the box, ending the match via mercy rule.
Despite the loss, Rosspoint battled throughout the contest and showed defensive improvement against one of the league’s strongest offensive teams.
