Harlan County boys soccer coach Tommy Key resigned his position Wednesday morning due to undisclosed issues related to his health.
“This decision has not come easily,” Key said in a statement. “After eight incredible years of coaching, I have made the difficult choice to step away due to ongoing health issues that require my full attention.”
As the Black Bears’ head coach since 2019, Key led Harlan County to the 50th District Tournament championship game in each of his years at the helm, including four consecutive championships between 2021 to 2024.
In his seven years as head coach, Key guided to an overall record of 52-49-5 and a 50th District record of 38-14.
Key was quick to mention his appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the Black Bears’ head coach and noted he will continue to follow the team’s exploits.
“Coaching has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” he said in the statement. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with so many outstanding student-athletes and their families.
“Watching these young men grow not only as players but as people has been the most rewarding part of this journey. The memories, relationships, and experiences we have shared will always hold a special place in my heart.
“I want to thank the administration, fellow coaches, and everyone who has supported our program over the years. Your encouragement, dedication and commitment have made these eight seasons truly meaningful.
“Although this chapter is coming to an end sooner than I had hoped, I will always cherish being a part of this program and will continue to cheer for its future success.”
