The Evarts Wildcats claimed the Harlan County Middle School Soccer League Championship with a commanding 4-1 victory over the Wallins Purple Devils on Saturday, overcoming a Wallins squad that entered the matchup as the top seed and previously defeated Evarts in regular-season play.
The championship featured a clash of contrasting styles. Wallins relied on a physical, aggressive approach, while Evarts leaned on speed, quick movement, and technical finesse. Both teams demonstrated strong field positioning and disciplined assignments early, setting the stage for a highly competitive contest.
However, Wallins’ physical style led to early trouble, as multiple penalties were called against the Purple Devils in the first half. The breakthrough came at the 12:57 mark when Evarts was awarded a penalty kick inside the box. Justin Coots stepped up and converted to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Evarts continued to apply pressure, and at 2:14, Jesse Pendergrass added another goal to extend the advantage. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead into halftime, firmly in control of the match.
Early in the second half, Evarts struck again at 25:16 when Aiden Napier found the net, pushing the lead to 3-0. Shortly after, a defensive miscue proved costly for Wallins when a clearance attempt was redirected the ball and Jesse Pendergrass tapped the ball in at 18:52, giving Evarts a 4-0 cushion.
As the match wore on, both teams appeared affected by the intensity and conditions, with play slowing noticeably. Wallins continued to battle and eventually broke through late in the half when Leland Cope converted when Wallins was awarded a direct kick after a penalty at 2:03 to put the Purple Devils on the scoreboard.
Following the goal, Evarts focused on maintaining possession and managing the pace of the game, using controlled passing and long clearances to keep Wallins from building momentum.
When the final whistle sounded, Evarts secured a decisive championship victory, overcoming the top seed to be crowned Harlan County middle school soccer league champions.
