The Harlan County track team had dominating performances at Magoffin County on Thursday as they competed in an all comers meet.
“I’m proud of our kids for their effort this evening. It was a long drive over on a school night and overall I thought we were dialed in and ready to compete,” Harlan County track coach Ryan Vitatoe said. “We’re coming down the homestretch of the season and there’s much to improve on in the next two weeks.”
The Lady Bears won with 218 points, 111 points ahead of Shelby Valley.
The Bears also won with 187.5 points, 70.5 points ahead of Johnson Central.
Event winners for girls included Lauren Lewis in the 800-meter run; Kiera Roberts in the 1,600-meter run; Gracie Roberts in the 3,200-meter run; Paisli Boggs in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles; Rileigh Duff in long jump; Maliyah Washington in triple jump; Suzy Mumford and Madilynn Lemar in pole vault; Makenna Dillman, Addi Gray, Macy Jones and Kenadee Sturgill in the 4 x 100-meter relay;
Dillman, Gray, Sturgill and Jaycee Simpson in the 4 x 200-meter relay;
Lewis, Simpson, Duff and Preslee Hensley in the 4 x 400-meter relay; Lewis, Preslee Hensley, Gracie Roberts and Andrea Napier in the 4 x 800-meter relay.
“I think we’re gettting better each meet on the girls side,” Vitatoe said. “We’ve had so many injuries this year, and it feels like we’re starting to get our legs under us.
“I thought Gracie looked her best so far this season. The same can be said for our girls sprinters. I thought this was their best performance of the season. The 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 were exceptional tonight.”
In the 100-meter dash, Sturgill finished fourth. Dillman placed sixth, while Jones was eighth. Hailey Perkins placed 42nd.
Simpson finished fourth in the 200-meter dash. She was immediately followed by Sturgill. Dillman was eighth.
In the 400-meter dash, Lewis placed second. She was immediately followed by Simpson and Napier. Autumn Farley finished 13th.
Kiera Roberts finished third in the 800-meter run. Napier was fourth. Layken Saylor and Bella Leath were eighth and ninth, respectively. Farley placed 11th.
Gracie Roberts placed second in the 1,600-meter run. Mumford finished fifth, immediately followed by Saylor. Leath was 10th, immediately followed by Farley.
Mumford placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run.
Preslee Hensley finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the 300-meter hurdles.
In long jump, Washington placed fourth. Jovi Tye was sixth. Aiselyn Sexton and Madi Nolan were ninth and 11th, respectively. Emily Creech placed 13th. Haley Johnson was 19th, while RJ Clem was 21st.
Tye placed eighth in high jump. Nolan was ninth, while Vanessa Griffith placed 10th.
“Jovi had a big night for us in the high jump. That was only her third day and she’s done great,” Vitatoe said.
Sexton was second in triple jump. Duff and Tye placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Savanna Madden placed fifth in shot put. Aubrey Madden was sixth. Clem placed 14th.
In discus, Addison Day was fourth. Clem was eighth. Taylor Reeves placed 22nd.
“We have a lot of work to do, but I’m proud of the girls and how hard they’ve worked this season. We’ve lost so many key contributors and everyone has stepped up over and over,” Vitatoe said.
Event winners for the boys included Jacob Schwenke in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run; Landyn Noe in the mixed 400-meter dash; Bryson Bryant in high jump; Jayce Brown in pole vault and long jump; Landon Cook, Jerome Monroe, Ben Cochran and Jonah Sharp in the 4 x 200-meter relay; Cochran, Schwenke, Trevor Farley and William Duncan in the 4 x 200-meter relay; Schwenke, Farley, Ethan Lewis and William Duncan in the 4 x 800-meter relay.
“Bryson had a huge night in the high jump,” Vitatoe said. “He’s only the second kid in HCPS history to jump 6’0.
“The sprint relays were very sharp and pulled their fastest time of the year in the 4 x 200.”
Sharp placed fourth in the 100-meter dash. Monroe was sixth, while Ryan Day finished eighth. Cook placed 11th. Cochran and Ashton Anderson were 20th and 24th, respectively. Sam Carr was 34th. Connor Wilkinson finished 42nd. Brantley Burkhart placed 49th. Joseph Wright was 56th, immediately followed by Ben Crain.
“I thought Jerome had a good meet. He keeps getting better every race,” Vitatoe said. “Jonah had a big meet as well.”
In the 200-meter dash, Sharp finished fifth. He was immediately followed by Monroe. Cook and Cochran were 13th and 14th, respectively. Carr placed 23rd.

In the 400-meter dash, Farley finished third. William Duncan was sixth. Wilkinson and Burkhart finished 13th and 16th, respectively.
Farley placed second in the 800-meter run. He was immediately followed by William Duncan and Braxton Hubbard. Karson Dunn and Jayden Sargent were sixth and seventh, respectively. Hunter Cornett was 14th.
Dunn finished sixth in the 1,600-meter run. Braxton Duncan placed seventh. Christopher Johnson was 10th, immediately followed by Lewis, Jayden Sargent, Kaylob Stevens and Hubbard. Uriah Roberts and Hunter Cornett placed 18th and 21st, respectively.
Braxton Duncan finished second in the 3,200-meter run. Jayden Sargent and Christopher Johnson were third and fourth, respectively. Dunn was seventh.
Cook, Monroe, Sharp and Anderson finished second in the 4 x 100-meter relay.
In the 4 x 800-meter relay, Hubbard, Dunn, Kaylob Stevens and Christopher Johnson placed fourth.
“I thought Karson Dunn had a huge night tonight. He’s been working hard and I’ve kept telling him his breakthrough was coming,” Vitatoe said.
Drew Sergent finished third in the 110-meter hurdles. Noe was fifth. Jaxton Hickson placed eighth.
Drew Sergent placed second in the 300-meter hurdles. He was immediately followed by Noe. Hickson was seventh.
In long jump, Caden Craig placed fifth. Bryant was sixth. Anderson placed ninth, while Jacob Brock was 15th. Noe and Hickson were 17th and 18th, respectively.
Bryant placed second in triple jump. Craig was third. Brock and Hickson placed fifth and seventh, respectively.
Brock placed second in pole vault. Anderson was fourth.
In shot put, Hunter Stevens placed seventh. Braxton Cornett was 10th, while Jordison Jackson placed 11th. Aaron Johnson and Aiden Jones were 13th and 15th, respectively.
In discus, Jackson placed 15th. Jones was 16th. Hunter Stevens was 20th.
“We have a big task ahead of us on the boys side in the next two weeks, but I’m really proud of them for how they’ve improved this year,” Vitatoe said. “When you consider only six guys on this roster competed in the region last year, it says a lot about how hard they’ve worked.”
Harlan County will compete again Tuesday at Williamsburg in the SEKC Championships.
