The Pineville Lady Lions entered the 2023-2024 season with expectations of a regional front runner and an All ‘A’ favorite.
They did little to dispel their lofty hopes by defeating perennial 14th Region power Leslie County 69-59 Monday night in Pineville.
Pineville was led by their trio of senior guard Nadine Johnson, junior wing Ava Arnett, and sophomore post Rachel Howard. Johnson poured in 25 points, Arnett 24 and Howard 18.
Pineville jumped out to an early 20-13 lead and outscored the Lady Eagles 21-8 in the second quarter to stake themselves to a commanding 41-21 advantage.
From there, the Lady Lions were outscored by Leslie 38-28 but held on to their lead for a double digit win.
Iris Napier scored 20 to lead Leslie County.
Pineville (1-0) will return to action Thursday night at home against Cumberland Gap. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
