The 13th Region Middle School Tournament opened Friday with games at both Harlan County High School and James A. Cawood Elementary School.
Harlan won 49-36 in a showdown against Rosspoint at HCHS matching two of the top sixth-grade teams in the area. The Green Dragons hit eight 3-pointers and played a strong defensive game with guard Judah Shope causing problems out front and center Kolbi Green blocking shots and rebounding inside.
Toby Hensley led the Dragons with four 3-pointers and 14 points, Green added 12 points. Waylon Taylor had 10 points and two treys.
Weston Nolan scored 12 points and Lakin Smith added eight for the Wildcats, who enter the county tournament on Monday as the No. 1 seed.
Bell County edged Wallins 35-34 in the second game Friday. Sam Carmical poured in 28 points for the Purple Devils.
James A. Cawood knocked off Barbourville 43-33 at JACES in the eighth-grade division. Adrian Fields and Taylor Daniels each scored 17 to lead the Trojans.
Pineville defeated Green Hills in another first-game at JACES.
The tournament will conclude Saturday with eighth-grade games at HCHS, seventh-grade games at Wallins and sixth-grade games at JACES.
