A 14-0 run in the third quarter and a 17-0 run in the fourth sent the Harlan County Black Bears to an 80-51 rout of Madison Southern on Saturday in the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea High School.
Junior guard Trent Cole poured in 28 points on seven 3-pointers to lead the 15-8 Bears. Senior guard Reggie Cottrell scored 18 one night after reaching the 1,000-point plateau in a win at Middlesboro. Brady Smith added 14 points,.
Senior forward Landon Adams led the 13-10 Eagles, ranked 10th in the always tough 11th Region, with 12 points
Madison Southern took an early 8-4 lead before Cole heated up with three 3-pointers and 11 points overall to help Harlan County go up 20-12 after one quarter. Cottrell added three baskets in the period.
Cole and Kaden Jones each hit two treys in the second quarter as Harlan County built its lead to 34-21 at halftime.
The Eagles cut the deficit to six early in the third quarter. Cole and Cottrell teamed on the first 12 points in a 14-0 run that was capped by a pass from Cottrell to Tucker Curtis for a layup. The Bears took a 54-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
Smith took over in the fourth period with four baskets and 10 points. HC went up 75-41 on a Brennan Blevins basket with four minutes left before coach Kyle Jones went to his reserves.
Harlan County travels to Bell County on Tuesday for a girls/boys district doubleheader.
