Cinderella’s glass slipper shattered Wednesday night at Corbin Arena.
After scoring a pair of upset wins last week en route to its second straight 51st District championship, the Pineville boys basketball team was unable to overcome a smothering defensive effort by Whitley County in the quarterfinals of the 13th Region Tournament, falling 76-48.
The loss by the youth-laden Mountain Lions comes on the heels of a district tournament run that resulted in a fourth consecutive trip to the 13th Region Tournament for the first time in school history. The regional win Wednesday night for the Colonels was their first since 1974.
Pineville opened the game by misfiring on seven of its first eight floor shots. An inside basket by freshman Noah Slone snapped a Mountain Lions scoring drought of just over two minutes, and Whitley County mounted an 11-6 lead after eight minutes.
Sophomore Preston Zachery scored five of Pineville’s seven unanswered points to open the second quarter to stake the Mountain Lions to a short-lived lead at 13-11.
A layup by Whitley County sophomore Bryson Mahan tied the score at 13-13, before the Colonels shifted into another gear on defense with full-court, man-to-man pressure that had an immediate impact on the Mountain Lions.
Pineville turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions, and Whitley County converted each of the Mountain Lions’ miscues into points during an 8-0 scoring run that staked the Colonels to a lead they would not relinquish at 19-13.
Two baskets from close range by Pineville sophomore center Kenton Brock pulled the Mountain Lions to within two points, but the Colonels scored the final six points of the second quarter and took a 25-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A long triple by freshman Anderson Gentry to open the third quarter offered a glimmer of hope for the Mountain Lions, but Whitley County sophomore Riley Fuson answered with a 3-pointer of his own and the Colonels’ defense continued to confound Pineville.
Leading 38-27, Whitley County got consecutive triples from senior Garrett Sharp as part of a scoring run that produced 11 unanswered points and the Colonels led 50-30 after three quarters.
Slone scored eight of his team-high 15 points during the fourth quarter, but Fuson countered with seven of his 12 points down the stretch to help secure the win for the Colonels.
The Mountain Lions turned the ball over 18 times, and Whitley County scored 21 points following Pineville turnovers.
Gentry and Zachery each scored 11 points for Pineville, which finished its season with an overall record of 14-17. After losing nine seniors to graduation last season, Pineville returns all eight of its rotation players next season.
Whitley County (20-11) was led by Sharp’s game-high 18 points to pace a balanced scoring attack. Mahan finished with 16 points for the Colonels, while senior Henry Bowling added 14 points.
Next up for Whitley County is a Saturday semifinal matchup with Bell County.
