After strong fifth-place finishes in the regional championship last season, the Harlan Green Dragons are striving to top that performance this Thursday at Williamsburg in the Class A, Region 6 meet.
Coach Trent McKenzie expects big things from his teams.
“Our goals would be for the whole team to come out and hit a big PR. I expect it from them all and they know what they are capable of doing,” McKenzie said.
Izack Saylor, Tanner Daniels and Jordan Rodriguez are expected to play big roles on the boys’ squad.
“Izack Saylor is a jumper who we expect to show up and do great. He could possibly hit a school record in high jump. He is a top-five jumper in 1A,” McKenzie said.
“Tanner Daniels is projected to win the 800 and 1,600,” McKenzie said. “He is mentally ready to compete with the top performers at the state level.
“Jordan Rodriguez has really broke out of his shell in discus this year. We are expecting him to have a great night also. He has proven he can throw with the best in our region.”
On the girls side, Gwendolyn Toll and Harper Carmical are anticipated to perform well Thursday.
“I expect Gwen Toll to start the meet off right at girls high jump,” McKenzie said. “She has a great mindset on what she needs to accomplish to get to Lexington for the state meet.
“Harper Carmical is another runner I’m expected to play a key role in the meet on Thursday. She has the determination and the want to be a top finisher within our region in 800, 1,600 and 3,200.”
The Dragons will compete at 5:30 P.M.
