With much of their offense from last year’s district championship team now at Union Commonwealth University, the Harlan Lady Dragons and coach Mackenzie Varner know they must be better on defense this season to make up for the loss of Aymanni Wynn and Kylie Noe. The Lady Dragons answered that challenge Thursday in their final scrimmage against visiting Lee, Va.
Harlan led Lee to only two points in both the first and third quarters on the way to a 40-20 victory.
Sophomore guard Addison Campbell scored 13 points to lead the Lady Dragons. Cheyenne Rhymer tossed in nine points with Peyshaunce Wynn and Raegan Goodman each adding eight.
Gracie Caughton led Lee with six points.
Wynn, Campbell and Goodman each had baskets in the the first quarter as Harlan held Lee scoreless until the final minute before taking an 8-2 lead into the second quarter.
Campbell hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter as Harlan extended its lead to 29-12 at halftime.
Goodman had five points in the third quarter as the Lady Dragons outscored Lee 9-2.
The Lady Generals outscored Harlan 6-2 in the fourth period.
Harlan opens its regular season schedule Dec. 3 in a tournament at Wise, Va.
