
HYDEN — The Harlan County Lady Bears knocked off two of the top teams in the 14th Region in summer action Monday at Leslie County, overcoming a slow start to defeat the host Lady Eagles 35-21 before playing much better later in the day in a 60-33 rout of Perry Central.
Harlan County trailed most of the first half with numerous misses around the basket before pulling even at 13-13 by halftime. The Lady Bears outscored Leslie 22-8 in the second half.
Sophomore guard Reagen Clem led the Lady Bears against Leslie with 11 points. Raegan Landa scored eight, followed by Jaycee Simpson, Kenadee Sturgill, Taylynn Napier and Shasta Brackett with four each.
After hitting only one 3-pointer against Leslie, the Lady Bears came out hot against Perry with five in the first half to build a 33-19 lead. The HCHS reserves continued to build on the lead in the second half as several middle school players contributed.
Simpson scored 15, Napier tossed in 13 and Clem added 11 to lead HCHS against Perry. Landa and Jocelyn Miracle scored six each. Crissalyn Jones tossed in four. Sturgill scored three. Andrea Napier added two.
Three Lady Bears reached double figures as Harlan County rolled to a 61-16 win over Owsley County in junior varsity action.
Eighth-grade forward Crissalyn Jones scored 18 to lead the Lady Bears. Kelsie Middleton and Jocelynn Miracle added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Adleigh Creech scored eight, followed by Morgyn Belcher with six and Annie Burton and Khloe Carr with two each.
The Lady Bears return to action Wednesday at Leslie County.
